August 31, 2018
COMMERCE, Texas – Gabriella Gamboa (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) and Reigna Banks (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) each scored two goals and the Metropolitan State University of Denver overwhelmed Texas A&M-Commerce with 16 shots on goal in a season-opening 6-0 victory Thursday in women's soccer.
Gamboa, a transfer from Division I Northwestern State (La.), also added an assist for a five-point game in her Roadrunners debut.
"That's a good team, a big, strong team, but I think we did a good job of playing our game and focusing on how we could be successful in executing our play," MSU Denver coach Tracy Chao said. "I'm proud of our effort."
Texas A&M-Commerce returned 10 of 11 starters from a team that was ranked as high as No. 9 nationally last season and narrowly missed the NCAA Division II tournament at 12-4-3. The Lions are picked to finish second in the Lone Star Conference.
But they were no match for the Roadrunners.
Freshmen Luna Garcia (Bakersfield, Calif./East Bakersfield) and Elisa Dean (Littleton, Colo./Front Range Christian) also added goals for MSU Denver, which returns for its home opener at the Regency Athletic Complex on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Dallas Baptist.
Erica Torres (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) was tested on just three shots in earning her 14thcareer shutout. She also moved into sole possession of sixth place in school history with her 23rd victory.
Banks ran her career goal total to 22, scoring at 29:39 and again at 65:52.
Garcia scored MSU Denver's first goal of the season, off an assist from Gamboa just 6:49 into the game.
"We definitely came out with good energy and started off really well," Chao said. "Having the ability to create and get goals from four players is really nice."
