Henderson Volleyball Defeats SAU 3-0 to Pick Up 11th Consecutive Win
September 14, 2018
MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Taylor Scalzi collected her third double-double in four games and Courtney Bolf notched 12 kills, as Henderson State extended its winning streak to 11 matches and defeated Southern Arkansas 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-22). The victory marks the first time in program history that the Reddies have started 2-0 in Great American Conference play.
Tyasia McGruder and Adrianna Hartmann both added eight kills as the Reddies beat the Lady Muleriders for the third straight time. The Reddies (12-2, 2-0) take a break from GAC foes this weekend and will play host to Mid-America Christian University on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.
SET ONE
It didn't take long for the Reddies to find their rhythm after the two hour bus ride to Magnolia. With the score tied 3-3, HSU used two kills from McGruder to rip off a 10-2 run and take a 13-5 lead. After a single point from SAU, the Reddies put the set out of reach with an 8-1 run to make the score 21-7. Bolf's fourth kill of the set put the Reddies in the lead, 25-12.
SET TWO
After taking the first two points of the second set, the Reddies looked to be off and running once more. However, SAU began to fight back, and tied the score at 5-5. A quick spurt gave the Reddies an 8-5 lead, but the Lady Muleriders would not go away, and fought back before finally grabbing the lead 17-16. Scalzi set Hartmann up for a center-court kill to tie the set at 17-17, sparking a 5-1 Reddies run to give HSU a 21-18 advantage. The Lady Muleriders pulled within one, but mistakes down the stretch doomed SAU, as the Reddies took a 2-0 match lead, 25-22.
SET THREE
The beginning of the third set was marked by mini-runs from both sides. After the Reddies took a 4-0 lead, the Lady Muleriders responded by pulling within three before a 5-0 run put SAU up 10-8. Two kills from Bolf highlighted the Reddies' answer, as a 5-1 run by HSU gave the Reddies control, 13-11. The back and forth battle continued, as SAU countered with a 5-1 run of its own to take a 16-14 lead. However, it was HSU that made the last surge of the match. The Reddies used a 6-1 spurt to re-take control of the set 20-17, and for the second set in a row, SAU pulled within one point but could not tie or take the lead, as a Gigi Garramone ace finished the match and gave the Reddies a 3-0 win, 25-22.
