Volleyball: Bulldogs Ace Rivalry Test

September 14, 2018

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Another large, spirited crowd packed into the Pioneer Cellular Event Center on Thursday night to see the SWOSU Volleyball team remain unbeaten in Great American Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State.

SWOSU won by set scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-14, improving to 10-2 on the year and 3-0 in the process as they continued the best start in program history.

The Bulldogs hit .231 for the match and backed it up with stellar back-line defense to the tune of 59 digs, but the biggest advantage for the Dawgs was at the service line, where Danusia Sipa Borgeaud and Klemson Lancaster combined for eight service aces. Borgeaud finished one dig shy of a double-double after putting away 10 kills and picking up nine digs to go along with five service aces, while Lancaster led the Dawgs with 15 digs in addition to her three aces.

Emily Holm got the Bulldogs going offensively in the first set with seven kills on 16 swings, the final one at set point that put the set away at 25-21. Borgeaud took control in the second set, serving up two aces in the first three points, while Lancaster added two more in a four-point run that pushed the Bulldogs lead to 23-11 late in the frame before an Elizabeth McVicker kill finished it off at 25-14.

SWOSU got off to a slow start in the third set and they were forced to play from behind in the early going before they scored five straight points on the service of Kaitlyn Dillon to take a 10-6 lead as the Rangers exhausted both of their timeouts. After a Northwestern service error, Kodee Avery stepped back to serve and the Dawgs connected on five more points to push the lead to 16-7 on a kill by Allie Hoang.

Leading 17-12 in the third, Borgeaud took her service spot and fired off two more aces to push the lead to 19-12 and begin Bulldogs final push to victory. Holm, Penina Faumui and Jenny Tackett put away kills during the final burst, but it was Lancaster finishing off the match in fitting style – with an ace – that ended the set at 25-16, much to the delight of the home faithful.

"I thought we served extremely tough and that really helped us keep a very solid offensive team to a low hitting percentage," SWOSU Head Coach Josh Collins said. "We had great energy overall and a lot of that stems from our crowd. We have a strong home court advantage right now with unbelievable energy from the student section and we greatly appreciate their support!"

SWOSU (10-2, 3-0 GAC) returns to action next Tuesday (Sept. 18) as they welcome Southeastern Oklahoma State to the Pioneer Cellular Event Center for another league match.
