September 21, 2018

MONTICELLO, Ark – The Arkansas-Monticello volleyball squad returned to action on Thursday, dropping a closely contested Great American Conference match against visiting Arkansas Tech. Despite the 3-1 final tally, the Blossoms had a chance to win in each of the four frames with two of the four extending beyond 25 points.

The loss drops UAM to 2-16 on the season and 0-5 in the Great American Conference. Arkansas Tech improved to 9-7 and 3-2 in league play with the win.

Both teams battled evenly early in the opening set. A 6-1 run, however, put the Golden Suns up 16-10. The Blossoms couldn't regain their earlier momentum from that point and dropped the opener 25-18.

Both teams again played evenly in the second set, grinding to a tie at 12 after furious back-and-forth action. From that point it looked as if Tech would repeat its run from the opening stanza after a 6-0 run put the Golden Suns in front 18-12.

The Blossoms, however, would rally with a 7-0 run of their own to grab a 19-18 advantage after a thunderous kill from Leslie Polanco.

Eventually the squads knotted the score at 24, but the Blossoms reeled off the final two points on a kill from Halli Lambert and block assists from Laurene Cushinberry and Shayna Daniels to take a 26-24 win in the set.

Arkansas Tech jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the third set of the game, capped by back-to-back kills from Hunter Eshnaur and Emily Acker. This time, Tech took command and never looked back, cruising to a 25-17 win in the set.

The fourth frame, however, would once again be closely contested. The Golden Suns fought to an 18-12 lead getting three straight blocks to cap a 7-1 run.

The Blossoms got off the mat and rallied, eventually knotting the score at 21 following a kill by MarKayla Dickie. The teams played back-and-forth until the score was again tied at 24. However, fate would not be on the Arkansas-Monticello side in this set as Tech tallied the final two points to end the match.

UAM was paced by Polanco and Lambert who recorded 12 kills each in the match. Shayna Daniels netted 33 assists in the contest.

Tech's Eshnaur led both squads with 18 kills in the contest.

The Blossoms return to action in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday with a tri-match against Rockhurst University and William Jewell University. The first contest of the day is slated to begin at 11 AM.
