ALVA, Okla. – It was all smiles for the Rangers at the Alva Rec Complex Thursday night as the Northwestern Oklahoma State women's soccer team secured its first win of the 2018 season, defeating the East Central University Tigers in a 2-0 decision.

Makayla Barrientos and Yazmin Gomez each scored for the Red and Black as the Rangers came out firing on all cylinders in what would prove to be their most complete effort of the season thus far.

Freshman goalkeeper Kiara Fontanilla stood tall to earn the shutout and her first collegiate victory between the pipes. The 5-foot-8 Californian impressed when tested, making six saves in the match.

Barrientos opened the scoring in the fifth minute as she perfectly placed a ball into the top left corner of the net from 40 yards out, giving Northwestern an early 1-0 edge. Armed with momentum, Northwestern controlled the ball for the majority of the first half and out-shot East Central 10-4.

Lady Ranger Mikayla Edris (19) tries to get around East Central's Kendall Smith (8). Northwestern played East Central Thursday afternoon.

Following the intermission, the Rangers picked up where they left off and continued to put pressure on the ECU defense. Northwestern almost added another midway through the second half, but a near breakaway for Calvonis Prentice was deemed offside.

Northwestern would add an insurance goal late in the game thanks to Gomez' third of the season in the 82nd minute. After taking a long pass from the Ranger zone, Gomez worked her way through a pair of defenders and beat ECU's Chloe Hull with a booming kick to the right side of the net.

Fontanilla made a couple of key saves in the dying minutes of the contest as the Rangers held on for a 2-0 finish.

With the win, the Rangers move to 1-4-1 on the season and 1-1 in Great American Conference play. Northwestern will have Friday off before heading to Bethany for a Saturday, Sept. 22, showdown at Southwest Christian University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Cagle Family Field.
