Women's Soccer: St. Edward's jumps ahead early, then holds off Lady Eagles
September 23, 2018
AUSTIN, Texas (Sept. 22, 2018) – St. Edward's (Texas) scored two early goals off corner kicks and rode that lead the rest of the way to beat Oklahoma Christian 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
St. Edward's (4-2-1, 4-0 Heartland Conference) is a longtime league women's soccer power and it looked like the Hilltoppers would run away from OC (0-7, 0-4) in the early going.
In the 13th minute, a corner kick by India Wentz went off OC goalkeeper Addison Milner's fingers and into the goal, and in the 16th minute, Chidera Aririguzo headed home another corner kick, taken by Eliana Chavez. That put the Hilltoppers ahead 2-0.
But OC's defense stiffened after that and didn't allow another score, even though St. Edward's outshot the Lady Eagles 24-3. Milner recorded three saves in the first half before giving way to freshman Josie Knox, who had six saves in the second half in her second appearance of the season in goal.
OC's shots came from Darrian Palacios in the 31st minute, Denise Bennett in the 53rd minute and Carley Cooley in the 85th minute. St. Edward's goalkeeper Annabel Sweeney made two saves.
OC will return home for a pair of Heartland games next week, against Texas A&M International on Thursday and St. Mary's (Texas) on Saturday.
