Financial judgments awarded victims of ex-Oklahoma doctor

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A former Oklahoma pain management doctor who pleaded guilty in the overdose deaths of several of his patients owes millions of dollars to his victims' families, but it's unlikely they'll ever receive much money.

The Oklahoman reports financial judgments have been awarded against 75-year-old William Martin Vanuck, who pleaded guilty in August 2014 to eight counts of second-degree murder. Vanuck is serving an eight-year prison sentence

The financial judgments have been awarded to parents, spouses and other surviving relatives of people who died after receiving prescriptions from Vanuck. Investigators have said Valuck prescribed more controlled narcotic drugs than any other physician in the state.

Vanuck said at the time of his plea that he was nearly broke and still owed $375,000 in restitution from a previous federal wire fraud conviction.
