OBU Volleyball Unsaddles Muleriders

October 7, 2018

SHAWNEE – A second-straight sweep for Oklahoma Baptist volleyball was the result as they dispatched Southern Arkansas, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-12), less than 24 hours after sweeping Arkansas-Monticello.

The Lady Bison played largely error-free volleyball, committing just 13 attack errors. That mark stands as their lowest since Sept. 15 in a win against Dallas Baptist.

After two tightly-contested sets, OBU shot out to a commanding 7-1 lead to start the third set, forcing an early Mulerider timeout following a Malia Leatherland ace. The lead would then balloon to 20-11 following a handling error by SAU that would see Southern Arkansas use their final timeout in the set. An ace by Destiny AbuBakir-Temple brought up match point, and a block by AbuBakir-Temple and Nicole Fleitman sealed the win.

Leatherland had a team-high 11 kills, followed by Mikayla Watson who posted 10 for the match. Hayden Blair finished with a match-high 23 assists, nearly equaling SAU's entire team.

Defensively, Watson and Kelsi Chavez each had a team-high nine digs. Fleitman finished with a match-best five total blocks, including one solo effort.

Oklahoma Baptist (13-12, 6-3 GAC), tied for fourth with Arkansas Tech as a result of Saturday's match, Friday, Oct. 12 when they head to Russellville to face ATU to break the deadlock in the Great American Conference standings. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
