Women's Soccer: Newman Scores 3 Late Goals to Tie 3-3 with Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team allowed three goals in the final 14 minutes of regulation to finish in a 3-3 draw with Newman on Saturday (Oct. 6) at Soldier Field. The marathon game took over four hours due to weather delays and overtime.

The Hillcats (7-3-2, 4-2-2 Heartland Conference) opened up a 2-0 advantage late in the first half with two goals in the final eight minutes before halftime. Madison Murray scored her first goal this season as she tapped in a cross from Kori Watters for a 1-0 score in the 38th minute. Watters got in on the scoring three minutes later when she scored in the 41st minute to lift the Cats to a 2-0 edge before halftime. Freshman Laurelle Theodore had the assist on the goal.

Early in the second half, the game was delayed due to weather. After the lengthy delay, the Hillcats jumped on the Jets with another goal in the 66th minute to extend the lead to 3-0. Sophomore Hannah Mushisky scored on a free kick to the upper right corner of the goal on kick from about 30 yards out.

The Jets (8-1-3, 4-1-3 Heartland) rallied for the tie with three goals in the final 14 minutes of regulation. Vanessa Ortiz started the scoring with a goal in the 77th minute.

Newman pulled to within one goal in the 86th minute when Grace Linton scored. The tying tally came in the 87th minute on a goal by Collen Howland for a 3-3 score.

The two teams played the first 10-minute overtime, but the game was called after two minutes of the second overtime due to inclement weather.

Watters finished with one goal and one assist for RSU. Murray and Mushisky each added goals.

Taylor Sargent totaled a season-high eight saves. The senior allowed the three goals and moved to 7-3-2 on the season in goal.

The Hillcats go on the road for the next two games. The stretch starts at Dallas Baptist University on Thursday (Oct. 11) at 5 p.m. in Dallas, Texas.
