Volleyball: Henderson Defeats NWOSU 3-0 to Pick Up 20th Win, Secure GAC Tournament Berth
October 14, 2018
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State notched its 20th win of the season on Saturday afternoon and clinched its spot in the Great American Conference Tournament, as the Reddies defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-16).
This is the first time since 2007 that Henderson (20-4, 9-2) has won 20 or more games in a season. The Reddies' berth in the GAC Tournament is just their second since the inception of the conference and is their first trip since 2016. The win is also HSU's ninth league victory of the season — its most since the formation of the GAC.
Courtney Bolf led the way for the Reddies with 16 kills and a .483 attacking percentage. Kenzie Thoman had a team-high 14 digs, while Abby Blackburn had 21 assists.
Henderson's next match is on Oct. 16 against Jarvis Christian at 6 p.m. in Hawkins, Texas.
SET ONE
With the score knotted at 4-4, Henderson put together a massive 16-7 run over the next several minutes, highlighted by three kills from Bolf and two from Zuzana Ondruskova. The Reddies extended the lead to 23-13 before NWOSU cut it down to 23-17, but an error and an Ondruskova kill gave HSU a 25-17 first set win.
SET TWO
Henderson stormed out of the gate with seven-straight points to seize a 7-0 advantage, but NWOSU slowly responded and eventually cut the lead down to just 16-15. The Lady Rangers would come no closer, though, as the Reddies finished the frame on a 9-2 run to claim it 25-17 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
SET THREE
The third set was tight in the early going, but with the score tied at 11-11, the Reddies put together another big run, this one a 6-0 spurt to give themselves a 17-11 lead. NWOSU used its last gasp to trim the lead down to 18-14, but a kill and two service aces from Bolf spurred a 6-0 run that helped push the lead back to 24-14. A kill from Bree Sanders moments later made it official, as Henderson took the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
