Men's Soccer: Early Deficit Too Much for RSU to Overcome in 2-1 Loss at Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman scored two goals in the first 16 minutes en route to a 2-1 victory over the Rogers State men's soccer team on Thursday (Oct. 25) at Independent Stadium. The Hillcats dropped to 8-7-2 overall and 6-5-2 in the Heartland Conference with the final spots in the league tournament going down to the final day of the regular season on Saturday.

The Jets posted two goals in the opening 16 minutes. Andreas Agrell put the host team up 1-0 in the ninth minute of the game on a goal off a cross in by Davide Panucci. NU added another goal in the 16th minute when Ignacio Lerech scored.

RSU got on the board early in the second half as Chris Sowder netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The junior headed in a cross by Noah Robson to the near post for a 2-1 score.

For the game, NU held a slight edge in shots at 11-9. The Jets finished with six shots on goal compared to three from RSU. Sowder, Jaxon Pitt, Erol Banuelos and Kevin Kwarteng all totaled two shots.

Freshman Jazz Dhaliwal started in goal, going the full 90 minutes. He made four saves with the two goals allowed.

With the 6-5-2 record, RSU has 20 points in the league standing. The top six teams advance to the conference tournament with the navy and red currently tied for fifth. Four teams are one point back at 19 with the final day of the league schedule set for Saturday.

The Hillcats end the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 27) with Senior Day against Texas A&M International at 2:30 p.m. at Soldier Field. Live stats and video streaming will be available.
