Women's Soccer: RSU's Mushisky Scores Overtime Golden Goal to Propel Hillcats to 3-2 Win
October 26, 2018
WICHITA, Kan. – Sophomore Hannah Mushisky scored in the fourth minute of overtime to propel the Rogers State women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Newman on Thursday night (Oct. 25) at Independent Stadium. The Hillcats moved to 9-6-2 and 6-5-2 in the Heartland Conference, however, their playoff hopes ended as Lubbock Christian clinched the No. 4 spot in the standings with a win today.
Mushisky took advantage of a poor clearance by Newman's goalkeeper and fired a shot into a wide open goal in the 94th minute of the game for the golden goal game winner to lift RSU to a 3-2 victory.
The sophomore tallied a brace in the victory as she scored her first goal of the contest in the 45th minute right before halftime as she slotted in a shot to the left of the goalkeeper for a 1-0 RSU advantage.
RSU doubled the edge to 2-0 early in the second half when Melissa Cardenas netted a goal on a free kick from just outside 18 yards that went over the top of the NU goalkeeper.
Like the first meeting between the two teams, Newman evened the score up late. The Jets got on the scoreboard in the 65th on a penalty kick by Grace Linton.
NU tied the score in the last minute of regulation to force overtime. Kyra Butler scored to the near post off a corner kick from Kennedy Weaver.
The Hillcats seemed to control play in the first half with a 6-2 advantage in shots, but the game tilted in Newman's favor in the second half as the host Jets posted 14 shots in the second period to only three from RSU. With two shots each in overtime, NU finished with an 18-11 edge in shots. Mushisky registered four shots with three on goal to pace the navy and red.
Senior goalkeeper Taylor Sargent finished with five saves with the two goals allowed.
The Hillcats end the season on Saturday (Oct. 27) at home with Senior Day against Lubbock Christian at Soldier Field. Start time is set for 12 p.m. with live stats and video streaming available.
