Sonja Williams, Woods County Economic Development executive director, and Todd Holder show a map of the Avard Regional Industrial Rail Park to members of the Woods County Retired Educators Association.

Members of the Woods County Retired Educators Association (WCREA) met at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Alva Public Library Auditorium. Sonja Williams, Woods County Economic Development executive director, and Alva businessman Todd Holder presented a very informative program on the Avard Regional Industrial Rail Park. The rail park is located at the intersection of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Trans Continental line and the Avard sub line that runs to the Port of Catoosa, providing access to the global market. Holder gave a brief history on how the rail park came into existence and its importance to the economic development of the area. Williams showed -a promotional video and distributed flyers containing information on how the rail park links western Oklahoma to the world.

Cosette Wymer, northwest district director for the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association (OREA), phoned in her report since she was attending another meeting in Enid. She reported that the OREA State Convention was well attended. She encouraged members to connect with all of the newly elected legislators regarding a COLA bill and other bills that pertain to retired educators.

Barbara Case presented the OREA Membership Minute on legal protection. OREA members have access to a quality law firm 24 hours a day for a nominal monthly fee.

The next meeting of the WCREA will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Alva Public Library Auditorium. Ben Orcutt, Alva's police chief, will talk about the Kids and Cops program.

Any retired person interested in the purposes of the organization may join the Woods County Retired Educators Association. Dues are $10 per year.
