Carl's Capitol Comments

October 31, 2018

Well here we are; it's election time again. I truly am thankful to the citizens of District 58 for allowing me to serve you for another two years. The scenery at the House of Representatives has already changed, even before the general election. We will have at least 40 new members this next year. Eleven incumbents were defeated in the primaries. Eighteen legislators decided not to return or filed for other offices. Others reached their term limits. The new legislators and those finishing their first term of office will makeup over 72 percent of the House of Representatives. These numbers could increase after the general election.

Needless to say, there has not been much down time at the Capitol. There have been six years of budgets cuts. Add a regular session and a special session that lasted over 14 months (the longest special session in Oklahoma history). Then add the first tax passed in over 28 years, shortly followed by a two-week teacher’s walkout. My hope is that with our strengthening economy, the next two years will be less turbulent.

I have tried over the last few weeks to inform you about the state questions. Some, like SQ 793 and SQ 800, hit very close to home. All of the state questions will make major impacts on the future of the state. I would ask you to review those questions prior to voting so you can make the best decision.

Besides the state questions, we will decide governor, lt. governor, U.S. representative, and judicial seats, and some will have county offices that will be decided. This is your chance to have your voice heard; please get out and exercise your right to vote.

You can vote at the county election board on Thursday, Nov. 1; Friday, Nov. 2; and Saturday morning, Nov. 3. Polls will open Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Each vote is of equal importance – that is what makes America a great place to live.

If you have any questions or would like to visit with me, please call my office at 405-557-7339, or email me at [email protected].

Thanks again for the privilege to serve the people of northwest Oklahoma. May God bless Oklahoma.
