Women's Soccer: Lady Bison Advance on Penalties
November 2, 2018
SHAWNEE – Surviving on penalties, Oklahoma Baptist women's soccer advanced to their second-straight Great American Conference Final after advancing over No. 4-seeded Ouachita Baptist in a penalty shootout, 4-2.
The Lady Bison made every penalty they attempted in the shootout. After Ashlyn Heckman misfired on the opening attempt for Ouachita, Kerregan Edwards put OBU up 1-0. Both Jaymee Dotson and Hannah White converted their attempts in the second round, as well as Ouachita's Bryson Thomas and OBU's Tori Kitchel in the third round.
Emily Griffith came away with a diving save in the fourth round on Shannon Stribling's attempt, setting up Reagan Mann for the deciding kick. Mann coolly stepped up to the spot and beat Webster to send OBU through to the final in front of a raucous crowd.
Oklahoma Baptist opened up with a flurry of chances to start the match, and was unlucky not to find a breakthrough as Ouachita goalkeeper Erin Webster had three saves in the opening stanza to keep OBU off the board. The onslaught continued for the Lady Bison in the second half, testing Webster 11 times but still unable to find the back of the net.
After two extra time periods, and a sure goal by Ruth King narrowly cleared off the line in the 105th minute, the match went to penalties to determine who would advance to Saturday's final.
Oklahoma Baptist (14-4-1) will face No. 2-seeded Southwestern Oklahoma State (13-4-1) in a rematch of last season's GAC Final. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the OBU Soccer Complex.
