Assessing Alva student learning, board hears report

Alva School Board members heard about ongoing assessments of student learning from Shane Feely, principal at Washington Early Childhood Center. Since the state moved away from Common Core and set up new academic standards, Alva is now using the MAPS program to check student learning levels in grades K-8. Feely said the program was instituted in the spring of 2017.
The old end-of-instruction tests are gone, and the ACT is now being used for high school assessment. About 30 percent more students are taking the ACT now, which will impact those averages.
