Harding Volleyball Defeats Henderson State 3-1 to Win GAC Tournament Championship

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The Harding volleyball team won its second Great American Conference Tournament Championship Saturday after defeating Henderson State 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21). Harding won its first tournament championship in 2012.

Harding will receive the GAC automatic bid and will find out at 9 p.m., Central Time Sunday who and where they are playing the NCAA Tournament. The selection show can be found on NCAA.com.

Madison Poen, Rachel Heussner and Zoe Hardin were selected to the GAC All-Tournament team. Zoe Hardin was also named tournament MVP.

The Lady Bisons improve to 25-7 overall and Henderson State ends its season with a 28-6 record.

Harding has now won 13 straight matches.

FIRST SET

Henderson State took a 9-6 lead in the first set until Harding went on a 10-3 run to lead 16-12. The Reddies then quickly tied the set at 16 on a 4-0 run. Harding answered back with a 4-1 run to lead 20-17. Trailing 22-20, Henderson State won five of the next six points to win the set 25-23. The Reddies hit .297 in the set and forced eight Harding attack errors.

SECOND SET

Henderson State jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second set until Harding battled back on a 16-5 run to lead 18-13. The Reddies pulled with two, 19-17, but the Lady Bisons went on a 6-2 run to win the set 25-19. Harding had 17 kills and hit .259 in the set.

THIRD SET

Henderson State took a 6-1 early lead in the fourth set. Harding battled back and then with the set tied at 13, Harding went on a 5-1 run to lead 18-14. The Lady Bisons held on to their lead as they won the set 25-20. Harding forced eight Henderson State attack errors in the set.

FOURTH SET

Trailing 8-5, Harding went on an 8-0 run to lead 13-8. Henderson State battled back and tied the set at 14. Leading 24-21, Emma Reeves had a kill to give Harding the set 25-21. Harding had 15 kills and hit .229 in the set.

- Madison Poen led Harding with 18 kills, hit .241 and had 22 digs.

- Zoe Hardin had 11 kills, nine digs and six blocks.

- Emily Clayton had 14 kills for Harding.

- Emma Reeves had 11 kills and tied a career-high with five blocks for Harding.

- Taylor Lake led the defense with 34 digs. Katherine Cowart had 17 digs and Taylor Eubank had 13.

- Rachel Heussner captured a double-double with 54 assists and 13 digs.

Henderson State

- Courtney Bolf had 24 kills and 27 digs for Henderson State.

- Kenzie Thoman had 24 digs.

- Zuzana Ondruskova had 12 kills and 19 digs.
