RSU Men's Basketball: Late Rally Falls Short in 80-75 Season-Opening Loss at MSU Texas

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Rogers State men's basketball team had a chance to tie the score with 18 seconds left, but the late layup was blocked, and host MSU Texas held on for an 80-75 victory on Friday (Nov. 9) to open the regular season.

With the Hillcats trailing 76-74, Jordan Johnson saw his layup attempt blocked by MSU's D'Monta Harris with 18 seconds left deserve MSU's slight edge. The Mustangs made free throws in the final seconds to hung on for the win.

The Cats rallied to have a chance after being down by nine points with 2:08 left. MSU took a 73-64 advantage on a dunk by Bishop Coulter for the nine-point edge.

Brewster Peacock and Tate Turner each hit two free throws to cut the deficit to five at 73-68 with 1:53 remaining.

After the Mustangs pushed the margin back to seven at 75-68, Tavian Davis knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to pull RSU to within one point at 75-74 with 34 seconds on the clock.

MSU split two free throws with 27 seconds left to give RSU the late opportunity to tie the score.

The Hillcats held a 13-point edge in the first half after a 13-0 run made it 21-8 midway through the first half. Chase Littlejohn hit two 3-pointers during the run and Latrell Tidwell added a three-point play.

MSU erased the deficit and led 37-31 at halftime.

Davis scored a game-high 16 points, one point off his career high. He added four rebounds and three assists. Turner, Littlejohn and Saint Hilaire each added 10 points. Johnson pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

RSU shot 39.3 percent (24-61) from the field in the game, while MSU finished at 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor.

The Hillcats are back in action tomorrow (Nov. 10) against CSU-Pueblo at 6 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas. Live stats will be available for the game.
