Red, white and blue salute to veterans, onward and upward despite obstacles

Because of the snow-covered ground and cold temperatures, the Honor Guard of local veterans at Kiowa's Veterans Day program do their prep inside the gym before stepping outside to do the 21 Gun Salute. They are: (holding the flag) Mike Mayberry, Bud Ruggia, Greg Robison, Dennis Christensen, Roger Robison, Mike Miller, Tom Trailor and Jake Newton.

Some of the veterans honored across the nation the last few days at ceremonies large and small faced situations unfathomable to most Americans in their time of service to the United States. But most persevered with that onward and upward attitude.

Go to Monday morning in Kiowa, Kansas. Nothing so serious as the troops face, but there was a challenge – no power when you have a gymnasium full of people ready to pay tribute to their local men and women who served the country at a Veteran's Day program.

The early morning snow and winds Monday morning played havoc with Kiowa's electrical line...
