Women's Basketball: OC upset bid falls just short against No. 24 Angelo State

November 18, 2018

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 17, 2018) – Tied against an elite South Central Region foe with less than two minutes remaining, Oklahoma Christian could hardly catch a break down the stretch against No. 24-ranked Angelo State (Texas).

A couple of turnovers and a couple of missed shots put OC in a hole and Angelo State hit its free throws late to hold off the Lady Eagles 69-62 in the opening game of the Hilton Garden Inn Pioneer Classic at Texas Woman's University's Kitty Magee Arena.

Carolyne Lawley's traditional three-point play with 2:01 left pulled OC (2-2) even at 60-60. The basketball teams traded a pair of empty possessions – both of OC's ending with turnovers – before Angelo State (1-0) took a lead on a layup by Marquita Daniels with 1:04 left.

Addy Clift, who scored 27 points for OC, missed an open 3-point attempt from the right wing with 52 seconds left and Asia Davis rebounded for the Rams, who milked the clock down to 26 seconds before Daniels hit a 3-pointer to push her team's lead to 65-60.

Maddison Collyer missed a jumper with 21 seconds left and the Lady Eagles had to resort to fouling. Daniels went 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in the final 16 seconds to seal the win for Angelo State. Daniels led Angelo State with 22 points and added seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Dezirae Hampton added 18 points for Angelo State, while De'Anira Moore had 11 points and nine rebounds and Maria Delgado had seven points and 11 rebounds. The Rams outrebounded OC 52-34, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds.

OC fell behind 13-1 to start the game but tied the game at 20-20 on a 3-pointer by Ali Christie with 8:38 left in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Clift put OC up 29-23 with 4:13 left in the quarter before Angelo State rallied to take a 34-31 halftime lead. The Rams held a 51-49 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Katie Mayo and Lawley each scored eight points for OC, which will play the host team, Texas Woman's at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Clift's 27 points raised her career total to 1,459 points, moving her past Lisa Landrum (1,433 points from 1985-89) into 11th place on OC's all-time scoring list. Clift will enter Sunday's game just two points shy of tying Tasha Turney (2002-06) for 10th place.
