No. 5 SNU Wins in Alva for the First Time Since 2013

November 30, 2018

ALVA, Okla. - One year ago, in a season that saw Southern Nazarene go 27-3 and 21-1 in the GAC, the one loss came at the Percefull Fieldhouse on a last second bank shot from behind the arc to give Northwestern Oklahoma State the 53-52 upset win over SNU.

Fast forward to not even a year later, and the Crimson Storm returned to the scene of the crime, making sure history did not repeat itself while giving the seniors their first ever win in Alva.

Mission accomplished.

Southern Nazarene forced 15 Ranger turnovers and held them to only 19 made field goals as the Crimson Storm took an 80-67 wn over Northwestern on Thursday night.

Revenge is never on the mind of this Crimson Storm, but it definitely felt pretty good.

SNU shot 27 of 64 (42%) from the field and 9 of 29 (31%) from deep. The Crimson Storm were also 17 of 21 (81%) from the line. Northwestern was only 19 of 59 (32%) from the field and 9 of 20 (45%) from deep, while going 20 of 24 (83%) at the charity stripe.

On a night where reigning GAC Player of the Year Jhonathan Dunn was in foul trouble, along with slow starts from Micah Speight and Noah Starkey, it was the role and bench players who stepped it up on Thursday night as SNU held a 24-16 advantage in bench points and a 28-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Junior Chris Stephens got it started early on, as the defense played off of Stephens from behind the line to focus on other scorers.

Stephens made them pay with nine points in the first half including three 3-pointers. The Crimson Storm also got buckets from Dunn, Logan Hicks, and Ashton Charles to open up a 19-7 lead in the first eight minutes.

However, the Rangers fought back into it, using a 15-0 run later in the first half to open up a 27-23 lead over the Crimson Storm as SNU uncharacteristically turned it over nine times in the first half.

Down by five with 2:53 to play, SNU closed the half on an 11-2 run thanks to a pair of buckets from Hicks, a 3-pointer from Zach Johnson, another 3-pointer from Stephens, and free throws from Speight to take a 36-32 lead into the break.

The run carried over into the second half as SNU got back-to-back 3-pointers from Hicks and Stephens to open the lead back out to 10 at 42-32. From there, Starkey and Speight began to get into the mix as they maintained their lead through the first eight minutes.

A 3-pointer from Coleman Edwards followed by four points from RJ Palmer opened the lead out to 14 midway through the half. Charles would connect on a 3-pointer later on in the half and SNU held their largest lead of the game at 16 points, 61-45.

The Crimson Storm maintained the double digit lead in the final eight minutes as Northwestern looked for just one run, similar to the first half, to get back into it. However, every time NWOSU looked for a run, SNU had a response.

The backbreaker came with 2:56 to play after Northwestern got a great defensive possession to go with a blocked shot that went out of bounds with one second on the shot clock. With the crowd into it, and maybe one more run in the Rangers, down 74-62, Speight quieted the crowd and took all the energy out of the building, draining a fade away mid-range jumper as the shot clock buzzer sounded to go back up 14.

Southern Nazarene closed it out from there to earn the 13-point win in Alva.

Speight finished with 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting to go with five assists while Starkey notched his second straight double-double, going for 14 points and 11 boards. Stephens added 12 points on four made 3-pointers while Hicks and Charles each scored nine off the bench. Hicks added three steals while Dunn and Charles had two.

A.J. Jones led NWOSU with 14 points and six assists while Joseph Moorer had 13. Treyvon Andres had a great all-around contest with 12 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, three steals, and two assists.

SNU moves to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the GAC. They will return to Bethany and prepare for a quick one-game home stand as they welcome in East Central for a 3 PM tip-off.
