Slow Start Proves Costly for Tigers

December 9, 2018

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – For the second consecutive week a Tiger comeback fell short on the road as Ouachita Baptist fell 68-60 to Southern Arkansas on Saturday afternoon.

Ouachita (4-3, 1-2 GAC) shot just 33 percent in the opening half before turning it around in the second half. Southern Arkansas (7-2, 2-1 GAC) took advantage by knocking down nearly 50 percent of their shots in the opening half. In the second half, however, Ouachita shutdown the Muleriders offense as Southern Arkansas made just 20 percent of their shots.

The Tigers got off to a slow start offensively as Southern Arkansas opened the game on a 12-0 run. Eric Brown (Greenville, Miss.) tried to stop the run with a three-pointer at the 15:04 mark, but I did not stop as Southern Arkansas took a 17-4 advantage going into the second media timeout of the period. For the rest of the half the Muleriders kept the pressure on the Tigers and never let Ouachita get within single digits on the scoreboard. Southern Arkansas went into halftime with a 39-24 lead over the Tigers.

Just flip the script in the second half and it was Ouachita who found themselves with the hot hand and Southern Arkansas was unable to buy a basket. The Muleriders missed their first 15 shots of the second half, allowing Ouachita to go on a 22-9 run. Senior guard Mahlon Martin (Little Rock, Ark.) knockdown a three-pointer at the 7:21 mark of the half and the Tigers found themselves back within a pair, down 48-46.

However, over the next several minutes, Southern Arkansas responded with a 13-2 run and retook a double-digit lead over the Tigers. Once again, Ouachita stuck around and clawed back into the game. Southern Arkansas knockdown free throws down the stretch to take the victory.

Morris Talbert (North Little Rock, Ark.) led the team with 11-points, forward Matt Stanley (Cabot, Ark.) added 10-points and Wesley Franklin (Frisco, Texas) grabbed a team leading seven boards in the contest.

Ouachita will look to end their two game losing streak next weekend against Harding. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tipoff. Game information can be found or follow the official social media accounts of Ouachita athletics.
