December 20, 2018

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 18, 2018) – Oklahoma Christian posted the program's first match-play win in a Tier I tournament, beating Calumet St. Joseph (Ind.) before falling to Urbana (Ill.) on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational at South Point Bowling Arena.

Despite the 3-1 loss to Urbana, it was a heady day for OC's first-year program, as the Eagles' match against the Blue Knights was featured on Bowl.com's YouTube channel that streamed the event, giving OC – coached by James Hayes – recognition on a national level.

The Eagles entered the day 11th among 37 teams in the prestigious tournament and held on through the final three individual games to finish 14th with a team score of 8,993 and make the cut for match play. It was only the second time OC had qualified for match play in a tournament, with the other coming last month in the Tier II Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge, in which the Eagles fell to powerhouse Wichita State 2-1.

Individually, OC's top bowler was freshman Andrew McCann of Lawton, who posted a 258 in his final game for a nine-game total of 1,923. Freshman Joshua Imhoff of Cabot, Ark., placed 42nd with a 1,868 total.

In the first round of match play – using the Baker game format – OC faced No. 3 seed Calumet St. Joseph (Ind.). The Bearcats won the opening game of the best-of-five match 203-193 and seemed poised to go up 2-0, needing only to score eight pins on their final shot. But only seven fell, allowing OC to escape with a 187-186 win.

From there, the Eagles closed out the match. A big strike by Imhoff in the ninth frame of game three keyed a 230-212 win, and Calumet St. Joseph had three open frames in the final game, which OC won 178-149.

An open 10th frame cost OC in its opening game against 11th-seeded Urbana and the Eagles fell 200-171. Urbana started the second game with three strikes while OC had open first and third frames, allowing the Blue Knights to cruise 233-186.

The Eagles rallied with a 228-201 win in game three, but Urbana took game four 224-206 to advance to the semifinals.

OC will compete in another Las Vegas tournament, the Collegiate Shoot-Out, on Wednesday and Thursday at Gold Coast Bowling Center.
