Golden Suns fall to Tritons in non-conference finale

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Hannah Villines scored a team-high 16 points and Lyrik Williams added a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, however it was not enough as the Arkansas Tech women's basketball team (5-5, 2-2 GAC) fell 64-55 to Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Williams scored the first points of the game to give Tech a 2-0 lead. UMSL started the game with some red-hot shooting as they connected on their first four 3-pointers of the game to take a 12-4 lead with 5:55 remaining in the opening period.

Tech ended the first quarter on a 12-5 run, and regained the lead after a Ryan Goodsell layup (18-17).

Arkansas Tech extended its lead to six on two different occasions (28-22 and 30-24) in the second quarter, yet the Tritons fought back and scored six of the final eight points of the half, trimming the Tech lead to 32-30 at the break.

The Golden Suns used a 6-0 run to start the third quarter to take a 38-30 advantage. Tech remained in control for the next five minutes, leading 43-35 at the 2:06 minute mark.

UMSL ended the third quarter on a 9-0 run, taking a 44-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Tritons outscored Tech 20-12 in the fourth quarter, sealing a 64-55 win for Missouri-St. Louis.

NOTABLES

Tech was out shot 36.4 percent to 35.9 percent. The Tritons also went 6-for-14 from behind the 3-point line, while Tech went 0-for-6.

Tech was outrebounded 44-37.

The Suns held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint, and a 10-8 advantage in second-chance points.

UMSL held a 14-12 advantage in bench points.

Villines and Williams were the only Golden Sun players to reach double figures, as Villines scored a team-high 16 points and Williams added 13 points. Williams also added a team-high ten rebounds to help her record a double-double.

NEXT UP

The Golden Suns return to Great American Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 3, as Tech travels to Durant, Okla. to take on Southeastern Oklahoma. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
