Not the kind of guy you date

January 18, 2019

My 40th high school reunion is fast approaching (North Mesquite High, Class of ’79 – “Stomp ‘em Stallions!). As a result, my Facebook account has been flooded with pictures of rapidly aging Texans claiming to be my age. Mind you, some of us are making our late 50s look good! My greatest memories from high school fall into two major categories: tennis and dating.

Most of my memories from the tennis court are quite positive and I’m still in touch with several of the guys from that team. If I remember correctly, we never threatened to win district but had a great time and got a great head start on our future skin cancers. About that same time, James Farrar and I were dominating the doubles circuit in our neighborhood. One summer, our record was 50 victories with only 2 losses. Our winnings totaled: several new cans of tennis balls and about $5 apiece.

On the less successful end of things was my dating career. Few people have ever worked so hard and had so little to show for their efforts (this was in the year 4BB – “before Becky). Perhaps one of the reasons I went into full-time ministry was the pallid parade of pain and suffering I discovered by asking girls for a date. Several grandmothers passed away (some of them more than once) requiring the object of my desire to regretfully decline my offer to dine. Then, what must have been a head lice epidemic might explain the vast number of otherwise healthy beauties who had to spend the entire weekend washing their hair. But my very favorite answer of them all was, “You’re not the kind of guy a girl dates. You’re the kind of guy a girl marries.” I guess they were right; 35 years and counting.

Take a minute to remember all the excuses you may have given over the years for why you don’t answer Jesus’ invitation. He sends out messages like, “Come to me all of you who are tired and carrying a heavy weight” and “Everything is prepared, come to the feast!” But keep in mind, Jesus isn’t the kind of guy you date. He’s the kind of guy you marry. See you Sunday.
