Golden Suns fall in Arkadelphia

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Sophomore guard Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse scored a team-high 16 points, while Jacie Higgins notched an 11-point, ten-rebound double-double, but it was not enough as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns (6-10, 3-7 Great American Conference) fell 66-55 to Henderson State (13-4, 8-3 GAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Arkansas Tech returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 24, as the Golden Suns travel to Weatherford, Okla. to face off against No. 17 Southwestern Oklahoma at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. A 5:30 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jacie Higgins scored the first basket of the game on a driving layup. Henderson State scored eight of the next nine points to take an 8-3 lead after two minutes of play.

Tech struggled to score as the Reddies forced the Suns to start 2-for-15 from the field, holding them scoreless for 6:34, allowing the Reddies to build a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Henderson opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run, stretching its lead to 23-8 at the 7:51 minute mark.

The Suns were plagued by turnovers in the first half as they committed 16 turnovers which helped the Reddies take a 33-16 lead into the locker room.

HSU shot 36.7 percent while holding Tech to 26.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes. The Reddies also held an 18-8 advantage in points in the paint.

Tech opened the second half on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 11 points (35-24).

HSU started the second half 2-for-15 from the field, however the Reddies went 3-for-4 from the line to build a 40-26 lead at the 4:45 minute mark.

A Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse 3-pointer and a Lyrik Williams layup helped the Suns cut the HSU advantage back to single digits (40-31).

Six unanswered Reddie points pushed the HSU lead back to 15 points (46-31) with just over a minute to play in the third quarter.

Henderson State maintain control in the fourth quarter, leading 55-43 with 4:51 remaining in regulation.

Ryan Goodsell cut the deficit to ten, then on the following possession Stackhouse scored her 16 point of the game to make it an eight point game with 4:21 remaining in regulation.

Pink Jones helped HSU regain a 12-point lead (61-49) after scoring four straight points.

Tech was able to narrow the advantage to seven (62-55) after a Williams bucket.

Holding on to a seven-point lead with under a minute left, HSU went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe to propel the Reddies to the 66-55 victory over the Golden Suns.

NOTABLES

Both Tech and Henderson State shot 32.8 to 32.8 percent.

The Reddies held a slight edge on the glass with a 41-40 advantage.

HSU also held a 36-30 advantage in point in the paint.

Tech outscored HSU 17-13 in the third quarter, 22-20 in the fourth quarter and 39-33 in the second half.

The Golden Suns committed 19 turnovers, compared to Henderson's 13.

Williams joined Stackhouse and Higgins in double figures with ten points.

Higgins recorded her first double-double of the season.
