ELKS HOOP SHOOT – 8-9 Year old Girls: (From left) Anna Roglin from Cherokee – first place, Taylor Dirdin from Alva – second place, and Morgan Matzke from Burlington – third place.

The Alva Elks Hoop Shoot was held Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Alva Middle School gym. This event is for youth ages 8 to 13. Contestants competed to sink the most 25 free throws.

During the contest, contestants have the opportunity to connect with new friends and learn valuable skills like hard work and good sportsmanship that will help them succeed on and off the court. Through the Hoop Shoot program, the Elks have been developing and reinforcing the importance of young children in our community for more than 46 years – long before researchers and experts concluded that "grit" in young children is so important.

The Alva Elks Lodge is proud of these Hoop Shoot winners. The first-place winners in each of the categories will progress on to the district competition to be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Kingfisher Heritage Gym at Ninth and Erwin in Kingfisher.
