Second Half Shooting, Turnovers Doom Henderson in 75-67 Loss at ECU

January 25, 2019

ADA, Okla. — Henderson State got 19 points from Hailey Estes and 17 from Pink Jones, but turnovers and cold second half shooting plagued the Reddies as they fell to East Central 75-67 on Thursday night at the Kerr Activities Center.

Estes hit five 3-pointers and also grabbed nine rebounds, while Jones added eight rebounds and five assists. Brittany Branum played one of her best games of the season with 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists off the bench. The loss drops the Reddies to 13-5 on the season and 8-4 in Great American Conference play.

After falling behind 11-0 in opening moments and rallying, the Tigers (13-4, 8-3) led 35-34 at the half and used a 14-7 run to start the third quarter and open up their largest lead, 49-41, at the four-minute mark of the period.

A 3-pointer from Maci Mains helped trimmed the lead down to 51-47 for Henderson with 1:30 to go in the third but ECU got a late bucket to take a 53-47 advantage into the final quarter. ECU shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the third while Henderson shot just 36.4 percent.

The Tigers extended their lead out to double digits early in the fourth, but with ECU up 66-55 with 3:15 to play in the game, Henderson tried to climb back, as Estes hit her fifth 3-pointer and a driving layup to trim the deficit down to 66-60 with two minutes left.

Two free throws from Pink Jones moments later cut the lead down to 66-62, but the Reddies would come no closer, as the Tigers iced the game away at the line down the stretch to hold on and win it.

Henderson out-rebounded ECU 38-30, which included an 11-4 differential on offensive rebounds, but the Tigers forced 24 Reddie turnovers and held HSU to just 10-of-31 shooting in the second half.

The Reddies return to action on Jan. 31 when they face Southern Nazarene at 5:30 p.m. in the Duke Wells Center.
