Alva Goldbugs fall in 5th-place game

Friday Afternoon

Alva beat Elk City in overtime 58-57 to go on to the fifth-place consolation game versus Cashion.

The Bugs were down by as many as 13 points in the first half of the game with Elk City. The second half the Bugs outscored Elk City 19-13 in the third period. In the fourth period Alva outscored Elk City 16-11 and tied the ball game. In the extra period Alva outscored the Elks 7-6.

Mitchell Meyer scored 16 points in the ball game, followed by Donald Blalock, who scored 10 points in the game. All of Blalock's points came in the second half of this game.

Saturday Afternoon

The Alva Goldbugs fell in overtime 68–63 versus Cashion Saturday afternoon in the Cashion Tournament.

The Goldbugs were playing for fifth place in the tournament versus the Wildcats. The first quarter of the game was a high scoring affair as Cashion led the Bugs slightly at the end of the period 20 -18. Cashion jumped out to a quick lead as the team went on an 8–0 run up till the 6:20 minute mark of the ball game. The run consisted of two three-point baskets and a lay-up.

Dylan Whitely scored the first basket for the Bugs. Goldbug's Reece Martin began to heat up in the quarter as he made three three-point baskets to help pick up the offensive load for his team. Martin accounted for nine of the team's first 18 points in the ballgame.

In the second quarter, the Goldbugs outscored Cashion slightly (10–9). Alva entered the half down by one point (29–28). The defense of the Goldbugs successfully sped up Cashion as the team didn't make their first basket until the 4:17 minute mark of the quarter. The basket came from a free-throw attempt by Jacob Woody.

Cashion didn't make their first jump shot until the 2:33 minute mark. Alva featured relatively balanced scoring in the quarter as Cameron Gordon found Donald Blalock open for a three-point basket early in the quarter. After Blalock's three, Cameron Gordon made his first shot of the quarter as he drove to the basket and finished over a Cashion defender.

Entering the third quarter of the ball game, both teams started and finished very hot from the field. Cashion and Alva traded baskets all quarter with Alva outscoring Cashion 21–16. In the fourth quarter both teams tapered off in scoring. Cashion finished the fourth quarter outscoring the Bugs 15–11 to tie up the ball game.

In overtime Alva simply could barely hang on as Cashion seemed to pick up their defense and cashed in on their free-throw opportunities. Cashion outscored the Bugs 8–3 in the extra period.

Dylan McGuire and Cameron Gordon both fouled out as both players were trying to give their team extra scoring opportunities in this game.

The Goldbugs will play their next game at home Tuesday versus Woodward at 8 p.m.
