Golden Suns ride past Rangers

ALVA, Okla.– Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse scored 21 points, Hannah Villines turned in a 18-point effort, and Ryann Goodsell contributed 15 points and nine boards as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns basketball team (7-11, 4-8 Great American Conference) rolled to a 75-54 win over Northwestern Oklahoma (5-13, 3-9) on Saturday afternoon at Percefull Fieldhouse.

The Golden Suns will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 31, hosting East Central at Tucker Coliseum. A 5:30 p.m. tip-off is scheduled.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Northwestern Oklahoma and Tech went back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the contest, with NWOSU claiming a 9-8 lead with 3:59 remaining in the opening quarter.

A 5-0 run by Tech gave the Golden Suns a 12-8 lead just over 30 seconds later.

Neither team added a point over the next three minutes, and a NWOSU jumper with 21 seconds cut the margin to 12-10 after one quarter of play.


Tech opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run to seize a 20-10 advantage with 7:22 remaining in the half.

NWOSU responded by holding Tech scoreless over the next 5:33, adding a pair of 3-pointers along the way to pull to within 20-16.

The Rangers cut the Tech lead to three (24-21) at the half.

Ke'Vonshaye Stackhouse buried a 3-pointer with 4:57 remaining in the third quarter to push Tech's lead to 38-26, the first double-digit lead of the afternoon for the Golden Suns.

Tech pushed its lead to 14 points (45-31) in the closing minute of the third quarter before going into the fourth quarter with a 13-point (47-34) advantage.


On the opening possession of the fourth quarter, Tech stretched its lead to 16 points (50-34) on a corner 3-pointer by Stackhouse.

The Golden Suns pushed the lead to 20 with 1:24 left after Jacie Higgins drained a pair of free throws, and Tech cruised to a 21-point win.

NOTABLES

The Golden Suns overcame a slow start shooting (25 percent in the opening quarter) to outshoot NWOSU 41.4 to 29.5 percent. The Golden Suns connected on a 55.6 percent clip in the fourth quarter.

Tech held a 47-33 rebounding edge.

NWOSU held a 6-4 advantage in points off turnovers and a 5-2 advantage in fast-break points, but the Golden Suns held a 26-20 advantage in points in the paint and a 11-6 advantage on second-chance buckets.

Tech made the most of its trips to the charity stripe, connecting on 17-of-21 free throws. Higgins and Stackhouse both connected on six freebies.

Jayana Sanders led Tech with six assists.
