OBU's Track Collects 10 First-Place Finishes

January 30, 2019

NORMAN – Oklahoma Baptist was the top finishing school in both the men's and women's track competition at the Central Oklahoma Invitational Saturday in Norman. The Bison took home first-place finishes in 10 different events, five men and five women.

OBU Coach Ford Mastin liked what he saw from his team against an elite field that included several teams within the region.

"We used today's meet as a chance to have a good training session indoors," Mastin said. "The Conference meet will be here so it was a chance to get ourselves acclimated to the facility."

On the women's side, McKae Mitchell was the top performer turning in first-place finishes in the 600 yard run (1:28.39) and as a member of the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team. Mitchell was joined by Sherine Van Der Westhuizen, JoziRose Mayfield and Cameka Witter as easy winners in the event (3:53.27), seven seconds better than the second-place team.

OBU went one-two in the 60 meter hurdles with Leah Molter (8.67 seconds) finishing ahead of teammate Isabella Lotz (9.14).

Lotz won the triple jump with a leap of 35-3 while Payton Wilson was the top pole vaulter clearing 10-5.

On the men's side, Sayvon Milton was the top athlete finishing first in both the 400 meters (50.21) and as a member of the winning 4 x 400 relay team (3:24.26). Milton joined teammates Eric Van der Walt, Devontrae Young and Shirvante Knauls and beat Texas-Tyler by three at the finish.

OBU nailed down the top two spots in both the 60 meter hurdles and pole vault. Cayden Spain won the 60 hurdles (8.45 seconds) edging Van der Walt (8.49) at the tape.

In the pole vault, Hayden Ashley bested teammate Andrew Worley. Ashley cleared 14-5 while Worley's best attempt resulted in a clearance at 13-11.

OBU's final first-place finisher was Saleem Fadel with a toss of 57-5 in the weight throw.

Both Bison teams return to the same venue Saturday, Feb. 2 for the University of Oklahoma's J.D. Martin Invitational.
