ALVA, Okla. – Despite getting off to a slow start in the first quarter, the Ladybugs went on to defeat the Lady Boomers of Woodward in the final seconds of Tuesday night's Homecoming game.

The Varsity Ladybugs came off a 1-2 Cashion tournament record to defeat Woodward in the final five seconds of the ball game.

In the first quarter, Woodward out-scored the Ladybugs 19-8. The Lady Boomers connected three times from behind the three-point line. Kirstyn Hines of Woodward led the team during this run with six points in the quarter (making two of three three-point baskets).

Jones connected from deep two times in this quarter and also went four of four from the free throw line as Alva outscored Woodward 12-7 in the final period of the first half. The Lady Boomers didn't have much cohesion on offense as Madison Gartrell led her team in scoring in the quarter with one three-point basket (the second of the game).

In the third period, both teams thrived on the offensive end of the floor as Woodward outscored Alva 20-15 in the quarter. Brooke Perez scores nine points during Alva's Homecoming game versus Woodward Tuesday evening.

Alva held Woodward scoreless for the remaining two minutes of the ball game as the team began to chip away at the lead. With less than 30 seconds to go in the game, the Lady Boomers inbounded the ball against the Ladybugs' full court press. The Lady Boomers brought the ball just past half court when Chloe Durkee came from behind to knock the ball out of the hands of the Woodward player. Hallie Durkee secured the steal and found Payton Jones streaking down court for the fast break lay-up.

Jones took two steps as she proceeded to make the final basket to put Alva up with under eight seconds to go in the game. Jones was fouled and missed the lay-up opportunity; however, she went to the free throw line and connected on both of her free-throw attempts to put her team up and ultimately win the ball game for the Ladybugs.

The Ladybugs will play their next game versus Riverside at the Enid Event Center today at 6:30 p.m.
