OBU Baseball Splits With MWSU, Win Series

SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist won its three-game baseball series with visiting Missouri Western beating the Griffons twice in two days. OBU, 7-3 winners on Friday, split Saturday's doubleheader taking the first 13-7 before losing the nightcap 4-2.

OBU, now 2-1 on the year, will next play at the Alpine Fresh 4-Him Classic in Cleburne, Texas. The Bison will play longtime rival Oklahoma Christian on Thursday, Feb. 7 followed by a Friday doubleheader against Newman University and Texas A&M-Kingsville. OBU's next home game will be Friday, Feb. 15 against Great American Conference foe Southeastern Oklahoma.

In the 13-7 win over MWSU, OBU's Jake Gozzo was the offensive star finishing with a three hits and seven RBIs. Gozzo put OBU ahead 2-0 in the first with a home run over the left field fence. He followed that with a bases-loaded triple in the seventh tying the game at 7-7. He drove in his final two runs with an eighth-inning double that plated Brett Bloomfield and Joey Pledger.

OBU finished with 13 hits against four different opposing pitchers. Ramon Enriquez, P.J. Harris and Pledger joined Gozzo with multiple hits.

Thomas Ruwe got the win in relief while after starter Anthony Castaneda worked the first six innings.

In the 4-2 loss, OBU generated just three hits off four different MWSU pitchers. OBU's runs came after a bases-loaded walk.
