The Waynoka School Board held its regular meeting Monday, Feb. 4, with all members present – Board President Travis George, Board Clerk Rick George, Board Vice President Gum Garret, and board members Clint Olson and John Hanson – along with Superintendent Scott Cline, Junior High and High School Principal Dustin Smith, and Superintendent Secretary Lori Adair.

After determining a quorum, the board approved the consent agenda, which consisted of minutes of previous meeting, financial reports including for the general fund, building fund, activity fund, child nutrition fund, bond funds No. 31 and 32; encumbrances for the general, building, child nutrition and bond funds; and change orders.

Superintendent Cline Discusses Building Repairs and Field House Construction

Superintendent Cline updated the board on work being done on the school building. In particular, he said it looks like the cost of replacing all the ceiling grids in the classrooms will cost around $30,000. "We're still trying to work through those numbers, but that's just a heads up that that will be coming down the pike," he told the board.

Charges for furniture purchases will start coming in too, he said, and those won't be covered by the bond, which only covers the building itself.

The dirt to bring in for the field house pad has been approved, but "we're still waiting on the original soil test," he said.

On student matters, he said the students' trophy auction brought in about $49,000. "Our trophy auction was a big success," Cline said. "I don't think they've got the final number, but so far I think it's a little over $49,000 that was collected at the trophy auction, so I thought that was pretty good."

He was also impressed by the performance of the boys basketball team in a recent game.

"Our boys played Cherokee last week and won that, which made them the area conference champs, which was a big accomplishment for them," he said. Looking to Principal Smith, he asked "When was the last time we won that?"

"Never," said Smith.

"Never! Okay, there you go!" said Cline. "So, that is a big accomplishment for them!" Everyone sitting around the table grinned.

Principal Smith Reports on Numerous Student Activities

Principal Smith had a long list of student activities coming up.

"The local livestock show is this weekend, Saturday morning at 9," he said. "District and Woods County Stock Shows are coming up in the next couple of weeks. FCCLA is going Wednesday to compete in Regional Star Events. That's something they've been very successful with in the past – they've gone on to state and been successful, and gone on to nationals and been successful.

"National FCCLA Week is next week; the FCCLA is going to do a few different things throughout the week. Band goes to pre-district competition on the 13th. Eight-man Football Coaches Association Powerlifting State Meet is the 20th in Snyder; we have a handful of boys going down for that. Basketball playoffs start here this Friday at 6:30."

He went on to discuss newly implemented educational measures.

"We've implemented ACT Prep this semester. Teachers in core classes are working on that with students," he said. "It's online. I feel like the teachers are doing the best they can with the technology that we have, implementing some personalized learning lessons through some free online software. I think the students are enjoying the autonomy of the online platform and that type of instruction. I think it's really good for our students."

Software Agreement Approved

The board then voted to approved the Trends Software License and Support Agreement with ADPC for the 2019-2020 school year. ADPC will provide the Trends software and services beginning July 2019. The software includes financial accounting ($365), activity fund ($40), activity fund offsite backup ($10), personnel ($40), staff development ($15), contracts ($10), inventory ($30), and Trends offsite backup ($25). The school will pay ADPC the sum of $6,420 in 12 payments of $535.

Student Council Fundraiser Approved

The board approved a fundraiser request from the Student Council that would raised funds for the summer leadership workshop, teacher appreciation, and student body activities.

"They're going to have an auction competition," said Smith. "A couple of the student council members are going to auction off baked goods, and there's going to be a silent auction of baked goods tomorrow night (Feb. 5) at the ball game."

Purchase of New Bus Approved

The board approved the purchase of a 29-passenger bus from Midwest Bus Sales based on state contract pricing for bus sales. The 2019 Minotaur bus will cost $55,655.

Personnel Issues Voted On

The board, after going into executive session to discuss the personnel issues, returned and approved resignations from fourth-grade teacher Heather Blumer, who is leaving to be a counselor at Wooward, and from Elementary Principal Michael Meriwether.

Heather Minson was hired to be a certified teacher for the remainder of this year. And Principal Smith was re-hired as junior high and high school principal.
