Mapes honored during 7th annual Oklahoma Mentor Day

Cathy Mapes (center), a volunteer with the Boren Mentoring Initiative and an Oklahoma State University animal science major from Alva, receives an Outstanding Mentor Award from Dr. Kayse Shrum (left), president of the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, and Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence President Cathy Render. Oklahoma Mentor Day, sponsored by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence and its David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative, honors outstanding Oklahoma youth mentors and promotes the value of mentoring. Shrum served as keynote speaker for the event, which was held this year at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Cathy Mapes, an active OSU student leader and sophomore animal science major from Alva, has been selected as the outstanding Boren Mentoring Initiative mentor in recognition of her consistent and thoughtful mentorship of Chloe, her sixth-grade mentee.

"Cathy's devotion to serving someone of the younger generation as a role model and mentor is admirable among college students," said Boren Mentoring Initiative Director Beverly Woodrome.
