Pitching Performances Key As Hillcats Split Doubleheader, Take Series Against Southwest Baptist

February 10, 2019

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State Baseball pitching staff combined to allow just one earned run in 16 innings on Saturday, as the Hillcats opened up their home schedule at the Diamond Sports Complex with a doubleheader split against Southwest Baptist.

After winning game one earlier in the week in Missouri, the Hillcats (4-2) fell to the visitors in game two of the series 2-0 to open the day. However, the Hillcats claimed the series in the rubber match, winning 3-2.

In game one, the Hillcats pitching staff gave up just two unearned runs on five hits and three walks. AJ Deason (0-1) would go 6.0 innings in the loss, allowing both runs on four hits and five strikeouts.

In a tough luck loss for Deason, the Hillcats dropped game one as the hosts were held hitless with just three base runners on two walks and an error.

Southwest Baptist (3-3) would score once in the first on a bases loaded walk and then added an insurance run in the sixth on a fielding error.

In game two, the Hillcat bats would come alive with six hits in the late innings, while Rogers State also drew five walks aiding them to the victory.

Southwest Baptist would again take an early lead in the second inning on a sacrificed fly.

After four more scoreless innings in game two, Rogers State got on the scoreboard with a bases loaded walk in the fifth as Blake Chiaramonte walked in Grant Farris to tie the game.

The visitors would capitalize on another error in the sixth, going back in front 2-1. But the lead would be short lived as a pair of sacrifice flies by Zack Mann and Griffin Keller scored Christian Merriwether and Mason Harvey to put the Hillcats in front in the bottom of the sixth.

Corey Murphy (1-1) picked up the win, tossing 6.0 innings with the two runs allowed on three hits. Murphy had six strikeouts.

Following two innings of relief from Sean Robinson, Brock Knoten picked up his second save of the season in the ninth.

The Hillcats will return to action on Tuesday, as Rogers State hosts the College of the Ozarks for a single game at the Diamond Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
