Sorensen's Complete Game Earns Split at SWOSU

March 22, 2019

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Michelle Sorensen gave Henderson State a complete game win in the first contest of Thursday's doubleheader, helping the Reddies split with the Lady Bulldogs on day one of the teams' Great American Conference series.

Sorensen (5-2) was excellent, as she went the distance and held SWOSU to just four hits to propel the Reddies (16-14, 10-8) to a 4-3 win. Southwestern held on for a 2-0 victory in the second game of the day to salvage the split on its home field.

The two teams meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader set for 12 p.m.

Game 1: Henderson State 4, SWOSU 3

After SWOSU got on the board with a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, Henderson answered in the third, as an error on the Lady Bulldogs' shortstop helped tie the game, and a sacrifice fly from Abbie Moore scored Ashlyn Taylor moments later to push the Reddies in front, 2-1.

The Lady Bulldogs erased the one-run deficit quickly with a run in the bottom half, courtesy of a wild pitch. With the game locked in a 2-2 tie it was HSU that seized control in the top of fourth. A sacrifice fly from Ashleigh Erb scored Madie Green to give Henderson the advantage once again, and a two-out single from Lindsey Williams plated Alyssa Dixon in the ensuing at-bat to surge the Reddies in front 4-2.

A sacrifice fly from Southwestern in the fifth inning helped the Lady Bulldogs trim the lead down to 4-3, and SWOSU put the go-ahead run on base in the sixth, but Sorensen escaped the trouble with a swinging strikeout and retired the side in order in the seventh to help the Reddies hold on for the win.

Marcela Lopez was the lone Reddie with multiple hits in the win, as she finished with two, but Erb had a good showing as well despite not recording an official at-bat. Her sac fly RBI in the fourth proved to be crucial and she also drew two walks.

Sorensen's victory in the circle is her fifth win of the season and her third victory in her last three starts. All five of her wins have been in complete games.

Game 2: SWOSU 2, Henderson State 0

The Reddies had opportunities in the second game on Thursday but could not scratch the runs they needed, as they fell to the Lady Bulldogs 2-0.

SWOSU scored a run in the first inning on a sac fly and another on a home run in the fifth. Southwestern was held to just six hits in the game by Henderson starter Becca Almond (3-5).

HSU's best chances came in the fifth and sixth innings. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, the Reddies got singles from Selena Mendoza and Ashleigh Erb, as well as a hit by pitch from Alyssa Dixon, to load the bases with two outs. They could not find a way to score a run, though, as a foul out ended the frame and stranded all three runners.

In the sixth with SWOSU up 2-0, Henderson had another chance to plate a run when Kailey Reese singled up the middle with a runner on second. Once again, however, it was not to be for the Reddies, as the pinch runner was thrown out at home by the Southwestern shortstop

Henderson put a runner on base in six of the game's seven innings, but stranded seven in defeat.
