Offense Held in Check as HSU Falls to Tech

March 28, 2019

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The Reddies' offense, which had been explosive in the last two weeks, was held in check on Tuesday night, as Henderson State fell 6-0 to Arkansas Tech at Clyde Berry Field.

HSU (15-14, 9-9) was limited to just four hits in the game by Tech starter Drake Norton (3-1), who hurled an eight-inning, three-hit gem while striking out 10 Reddie batters.

After ATU (21-10, 14-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Henderson had perhaps its best chance to score all game in the bottom half, when walks from Brandon Pollock and Danny Mitchell Jr., followed by a sacrifice bunt, gave the Reddies two runners in scoring position with just one out. Nothing came of the scoring opportunity, however, as a strike out and ground out ended the frame.

The Reddies moved a baserunner to third with one out in the second inning as well, but after they stranded him again, it was tough sledding for Henderson in the remainder of the contest. HSU managed just two hits over the next seven innings of play — one of which was a bunt single in the ninth.

Tech's GAC-leading offense was kept under wraps for several innings by Henderson's pitching, led by starter Dalton O'Donnell (2-1), but the Wonder Boys finally broke open a 1-0 game in the late innings, as they tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh, then added three in the eighth, to pull away for the win.

O'Donnell gave the Reddies 5 1/3 innings of work and allowed just four hits and two runs, but the Henderson pitching staff as a whole allowed eight walks and hit two batters, which proved costly in the eighth, when ATU scored its three runs on just one hit.

Mitchell Jr. had two of HSU's four hits in the game, including the Reddies' only extra base hit on a double in the sixth.

Henderson returns on Friday, when it hosts East Central in the first game of the teams' GAC series at 6 p.m. in Arkadelphia.
