The Christian life is meant to be easy

In the 11th chapter of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

The first thing I notice about this passage is how personal it is. Jesus says, “Come to me.” He doesn’t say “Come to the preacher,” or “Come to the church,” or “Come to a code of moral conduct.” There’s nothing wrong with the preacher or the church as long as they stick to their proper function: directing...
