Waynoka School Board purchases new Suburban, junior high lockers

Rehires career and temporary teachers for 2019-20 school year

The Waynoka School Board approved the consent agenda, which consisted of change orders, along with reports on and encumbrances for the general, activity, building, child nutrition, and bonds No. 31 and 32 funds.

Present were board members Garrett Gum, John Hanson, Travis George and Rick George, as well as Superintendent Scott Cline and minutes clerk Lori Adair. Board member Clint Olson was absent. (The video of the meeting can be seen in its entirety on AlvaReviewCourier.com.)

Financials Okay For Now, Despite Downward Trend In Gross Production

“As you can see, in our general fund expenditures are up $278,000,” said Superintendent Cline. “Most of that's obviously the increase in our payroll. Our revenue is up so far $688,000, and we're still collecting our ad valorem money. Gross production is down yet again another month, cut in half – $26,000 where the year before it was $53,000. That trend is not a very positive trend for us, but money-wise we're sitting okay financially right now.”

Construction Update

The concrete pads at the entrance of the school, as well as the safe room and half of the media center, are scheduled to be poured on Thursday, Cline said. “But on Wednesday there's a chance of rain, so it may not happen,” he cautioned. “We've started creating the pad for the entrance, so as soon as they get that built up, they'll be able to finish that,” he said, which will alleviate some logistical headaches.

After the pads are poured at the main school building, he said, “they'll move down there to the football field house and get that set up.”

The roof framing has begun on the gym, he said.

School May Buy Classroom Supplies, Instead of Sending Out Supply List

“One thing we are going to do that I think is a positive thing to do for our community and our kids is, since we do have the money in our general fund, we're going to look at buying all the school supplies needed instead of sending out a supply list,” Cline said. “I'm trying to get together how much that's going to cost. I'm not talking book bags, tennis shoes, that kind of thing., I'm talking pencils, notebooks, paper, crayons, markers, all that kind of stuff.”

It would be dispensed from the classroom. At the beginning of the year, students would receive, for example, a dozen pencils. If they lose them or use more than that during the year, they'll have to buy more themselves. “But it will hopefully cut down on how much parents are having to shell out.”

Board Purchases Lockers, New Suburban, and Rubber Flooring

The board approved the purchase of lockers for junior high field house locker rooms. The lowest bid was from Bunst and Sexton for $28,395.

They also approved the purchase of a new Suburban from Croft for $44,105, which was the lowest bid.

The board approved purchasing rubber flooring for the field house and weight room for $38,200 from Apex Flooring, which had the lowest bid.

Hannah Guthrie was hired as a temporary certified teacher upon Superintendent Cline's recommendation.

Career teachers reemployed for the 2019-20 school year were: (full time) Marjie Bagley, Patti Gaskill, Renea Gaskill, Kelly Meriwether, Ashley Murrey, Steve Nutter, Erin Place, Alicia Pitts, Debra Rankin, Lindsay Seaman, Megan Smith, Jordan Taylor, Beau Westfahl; and (part time) Jo Ann Bellmon, Rodeana Bixler and Murletta Crissup.
