The Financial Fitness program at the Alva Public Library is going well, according to Sandra Ott Hamilton, library director. She said eleven people enrolled in the program and all showed up for the second session. Participants range in age from a high school student to people who are retired. Charlotte Hadwiger of Northwest Technology is the facilitator. The library hopes to make this an annual event.

The Chocolate Fantasy sponsored by the Friends of the Alva Public Library was held April 4. Hamilton said she didn’t have exact figures but over $12,000 was raised to benefit the library.

The Code Club has been meeting for about four weeks. Students would like to show off their work so there’s discussion about an exhibition night for parents and teachers to attend.

The Little Explorers group is going strong and will continue through the summer, said Hamilton. The summer reading program this year will be for children who will be going into kindergarten or higher grades in the fall. Younger kids will be able to participate in Little Explorers.

Hamilton said there is interest in a Lego Club for parents and kids to meet and build projects. The library is also planning some programs for ‘tweens and teens.

Amy Ryerson and Angela Courson recently attended training in Fairview, which will go toward their goal of becoming certified librarians. Courson is planning more training in Cherokee. Hamilton will be doing some training in online classes.

Hamilton announced that David Kovarovic has submitted his resignation from the library board due to health issues. She will notify the mayor so a replacement may be appointed.

Kovarovic and Board Chairman Lynn Wilt were absent from the meeting. Chris Eckhardt presided.

Hamilton reported on attending the city’s budget retreat. She said she submitted budget figures that are $5,500 more than this year. She said one of the needed capital improvements needed at the library will be five new computers. Current computers need to be updated.
