Offensive onslaught by Rangers Baseball leads to doubleheader sweep of ECU

ALVA, Okla. – Johnnuelle Ponce joined a short list of Northwestern Oklahoma State University baseball players Monday afternoon in a Ranger offensive explosion over the East Central Tigers at Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium.

Northwestern tallied 41 runs and 41 hits on the afternoon en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Tigers. The Rangers took the first game in a run-rule victory, 18-2, only to top their total in the first game with a 23-11 win in the night cap.

The Rangers' two-game run total is the most in back-to-back games since the 2009 team had 45 in a doubleheader against Concordia (Neb.). NWOSU and ECU had a total of 37 hits in the second game, which tied the Great American Conference record for combined hits in a game.

Northwestern improved to 22-19 overall this season and 11-15 in league play.

Ponce had himself a day Monday as he went deep three times in the doubleheader opener with eight runs batted in. The senior is the 10th Ranger in program history to record three homers in the game, with teammate Justin Bundy achieving the feat most recently at Fort Hayes State during the 2018 season.

Ponce's eight RBI is also a Northwestern program high since the Rangers started playing a NCAA DII schedule in 2012.

To go along with his three home runs in Game 1 of the afternoon, Ponce added another two-run shot in the second game. Ponce finished the day 5-for-10 with 11 RBI and six runs scored.

Bundy went back-to-back with Ponce in the second game for home run No. 11 on the season. The senior finished the afternoon with six hits, five RBI and crossed the plate six times.

Greg Carrington continued a hot week with a 4-for-6 game in the second contest, including three doubles, four RBI and three runs scored. He also added an RBI in the first game on a sacrifice fly.

Luis Cintron had four hits in the second game to go along with a hit in game one as he accounted for six total runs (four runs scored and two RBI). Luis Mendoza had four hits, four RBI and five runs scored and Daschal Johnson had four hits, five runs scored and a run batted in.

Northwestern had 19 extra base hits in the Monday doubleheader. Bundy had a triple and a double to go along with his home run, Justin Gordon had two doubles, Bryce Donovan and Luis Mendoza each had a triple in the first game. Jake Darrow and Daschal Johnson also added a double each in sweep.

Game one starting pitch Matt Goertzen compiled seven strikeouts for the second time in three starts as he went six innings for the victory to move to 5-3 this season. Dax Jallo made his second appearance of the season and threw and inning with a strikeout.

Jacob Uhing was the winning pitcher for the Rangers in the second contest to move his record to 5-1 this season.
