Slow Start Dooms SNU in Loss to SWOSU
April 21, 2019
BETHANY - An eight run first inning put the Southern Nazarene in a hole they could not climb out of as they dropped the series finale to the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs by the score of 17-6 (7) on Saturday afternoon at Feland Field.
The Bulldogs got eight runs on eight hits in the first inning and was able to build a sizable lead. SNU got a run back in the bottom of the first, but SWOSU scored two in the third inning to increase their lead to 10-1.
SNU got one back in the fourth inning on a RBI single from Tanner Ladon and one more in the fifth inning on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 10-3. SNU would load the bases in the fifth with no out, but only had one run to show for in the frame.
SWOSU got a five run inning in the sixth to push the lead out to 15-3; however, SNU did not go down quietly as Garrett Perez singled home a run while the Crimson Storm took advantage of some SWOSU miscues to get it back under 10 runs at 15-6.
The Bulldogs would add two more runs in the seventh and would put SNU down in the order to close the game out and take the 17-6 victory.
Jackson Berry got the start, but was only able to last 0.2 innings. Elijah Brady and Cole Lee each saw 2+ innings of work while Landon Walker and David Lechuga also came out of the pen.
Perez was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored while Lee was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Connor Dayton was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Ladon was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Jefferson Harris was 1-for-1 on the day.
SNU moves to 9-31 overall and 3-27 in the GAC. They will conclude the season next weekend with a three-game series against Oklahoma Baptist at Feland Field. The series will start on Friday with first pitch at 3 p.m.
