Sad day in Kiowa – The Kiowa News closes after 126 years

The news was definitely an “extra, extra, read all about it moment” Tuesday morning, but the weekly publication of The Kiowa News was nowhere to be found.

Rex Zimmerman and his wife Diann have owned The Kiowa News for 40 years exactly this week. You've seen him taking pictures at every sporting event, activity in the community, nearly every school function, and it would be scary to count the number of meetings he's covered. Think of all the 5K Races, Labor Days, Easter Egg Hunts, and Santa pictures with cute kids at the Chief Theatre and other traditional events he's covered for 40 years.

Zimmerman said that last night he had his paper all ready to print and the press he uses out of town broke. That was it for the Zimmermans.

“It was just one of those perfect storms. We were looking to retire later this year anyway, but didn't want it to happen this way, but it did,” Zimmerman said. “You can let folks know that we (The Kiowa News) had a good 126 year run.”

He declined to comment on the status of the printer shop because he has no idea what the future holds for that business. Nor does he know what any of the other papers that were printed there will do.

“As of now, I am the only newspaper that has ceased operation,” Zimmerman said.
