At Freedom Monday, cowboys participate in steer roping an event in which they had to rope a steer and tie all legs up in a timely manner and the steer cannot be able to escape the knot.

The Freedom Chamber of Commerce hosted a steer roping event at the Freedom rodeo grounds Monday, June 3, at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Sixty-four cowboys from Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico and Nebraska competed in the steer roping event for the best time. Cowboys big and small attended; including 24 time world champion Trevor Brazile, who made his way up on the leaderboard with a time of 11.4 in round 3.

After an all-day three round competition, cowboys Chet Herren of Pawhuska and JP Wickett of Sallisaw tied for best time at 10.3 seconds.

This event brought a lot of business not only for the town of Freedom but for the chamber of commerce as well. "By bringing events to the community, it brings people to see the small town charm we have to offer and it brings more economic growth into our community as well," said Freedom chamber board member and Freedom public school ag teacher Bryant Weber.

While this event was a great opportunity for Freedom community members to enjoy a small rodeo, the Woodward Elks Foundation also awarded 2019 Freedom graduate Cameron Denham a $1,000 scholarship toward his higher education.

More Woodward Elks Rodeo events took place in Buffalo and Woodward including other steer roping events and slack. This, along with a chain of other events throughout the week, is in preparation for the Woodward Elks Rodeo being held June 5-8 in Woodward at 8 p.m. For more information about the Woodward Elks Rodeo visit woodwardelksrodeo.com.
