Keep an eye on them

I was glad to see many concerned citizens show up at the council meeting on Monday. I was also glad to see Mayor Kelly tabled the fire charges. He said he was going to send it back to committee for more study. In case you don't understand, back to the committee equates to repositioning the citizens of Alva to stick it to us from a different angle.

I Googled charging for fire calls and not many towns do this. I am not totally opposed to fire call charges in some cases, but over-educated people will let intelligence override common sense in the planning.

I also have not heard word one from the fire department on how they stand on this issue. Did they think this up or did Joe Don and Kelly spring it on them? One last thought. If they are going to charge for fire calls, does this mean we can get back the tax dollars we already spend for protection? However, it goes I am very proud of our city workers and their great service to the community no matter what their job.

I was surprised the spraying had so many negative opinions, but I can see both sides of the problem. I need to call and ask, but on the swimming pool, are there funds available somewhere if it were considered a historical site?

Cleo and I have had quite a week. Well, at least the last half. Cleo had a doctor’s appointment in Cherokee on Wednesday, and we both had appointments in Enid on Thursday. She gets a robocall Tuesday saying she needs to be in Cherokee on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Her original appointment was at 10 a.m. We start to Cherokee and about Ingersoll Cleo realizes her paperwork is at home, so back we go to get it.

We make it on time, and the lady explains that we had missed the 10 a.m. appointment by two and a half hours. Cleo tells her about the call she got, but the lady had no clue about it. We can get back in at 4 p.m., so rather than get home and turn around to go back, Cleo had not seen the Salt Plains Lake since the rains so we went over there.

The water had really gone down from the highs Dad and I had seen before. The first road around the curve was underwater before, and Cleo and I drove down it. Lots of driftwood had washed up everywhere. There were a few fishermen scattered around.

Evidently, the call machine got confused because Cleo's appointment in Enid was at another clinic like the one at Cherokee at 12:30. I have a 10 appointment. It is great when you can get multiple out-of-town doctor visits on the same day, and spread out just right. We get almost to Enid on Thursday morning, and they called Cleo and canceled her appointment and rescheduled it for next week.

Friday, we had to go to Pawhuska to see my sister-in-law that is having health concerns. Why does everything happen to me and Dick Tracy?

I jumped the gun a bit on Paul Cole's birthday. I just glanced at the Newsgram at his well wishes and didn't look at the date. He is such a nice man it is worth a reprint in case someone missed it. Saturday was Paul Cole's 70th birthday. For those that don't know Paul, he is the preacher at the Town and Country Christian Church here in Alva. Besides being a preacher, his other job is keeping wife Margaret in line. He does well at both. If you put Paul in a line up for people to guess what they do for a living, no one would guess he is a preacher. He has always looked like a farmer to me. Happy Birthday, friend. Also, there is a rumor going around that if you will attend the Town and Country Church at 829 Church St. this Sunday you will get a great message about the Lord, and birthday cake, too.
