BJCC celebrates 4th with annual marching competition
July 5, 2019
After countless hours of marching drills, officers and inmates at Bill Johnson Correctional Center in Alva demonstrated their skills in the annual 4th of July celebration.
Warden Becky Guffy kicked off the 9th Annual Marching Contest on Wednesday, July 3, at 9 a.m. This tradition began in July 2011 when Craig Beavers was the deputy warden. His intention was to give the inmates an opportunity to excel in something incorporating their hard work and initiative in a way that demonstrated dignity and pride. Beavers and his wife Leasa were in a fatal motorcycle accident returning to Alva, May 28, 2012. BJCC has continued the annual marching competition in his honor each year.
Sgt. James Polluck is a committed drill instructor at BJCC who works with the inmates in the regimented phase of the program on a daily basis. D.I. Polluck trained the inmates to perform the Posting of the Colors by military protocol, which was a part of Wednesday's program. D.I. Polluck also mentored the Charlie marching squad who delivered an amazing performance.
The yard's population was allowed to attend the competition and cheer for their marching teams. The accustomed cheers and roars from the crowd following the national anthem preceded the marching teams who demonstrated their hard work and initiative, all of which displayed dignity and pride.
