Arena cost figures to be presented at August meeting

It may seem that the Alva Arena project is moving at snail speed, but there is forward progress. The Alva Arena Authority met Tuesday noon in a special meeting in the Alva State Bank annex.

Present for the meeting were Chair Gregg Glass and members Dr. Janet Cunningham, Darrel Kline, Daren Slater, Todd Holder and Mike Hood. Sonja Williams was present to record the minutes. Board member Dr. Charles Tucker was absent.

Holder gave the treasurer’s report stating the entity has $103,489.10 in the bank. He said they recently received $325,000 from Share Trust so they could pay the architect’s bill.

Priefert Expo Design has delegated to Timberlake the task of figuring out the cost of every part of the construction. Timberlake has a deadline of July 19 to finish their work and submit it to Priefert. After going over the figures and ironing out any questions and concerns, the costing information will go to Glen Calvert of Priefert who will then present it at the Aug. 6 meeting of the Alva Arena Authority.

Several board members mentioned that Timberlake has been talking to potential sub-contractors so they know the work is ongoing.

Holder reported the search for an arena manager and assistant manager is continuing. He said they’ve received some recommendations, but none of those contacted are available currently. He solicited recommendations from anyone who knows of a good management team.

Regarding funding, Holder said it’s a waiting game. Until final dollar amounts are pinned down, no further progress can be made. He said he’s staying in contact with possible sources and keeping them updated. Several different funding avenues are being pursued.
