Cherokee School Board fills staffing vacancies

August 7, 2019

The Cherokee school board met Monday evening, and quickly approved the consent agenda, consisting of fund encumbrances, purchase orders, warrants, and balances; fundraiser requests (in this case, FCCLA sponsor cards and high school cheerleaders' car hop fundraiser at Sonic), and the resignation of Todd Swafford.

Personnel

The board hired Mark Smithy as a certified teacher, and Karen Parker and Brent Walborn as support staff. They also approved as adjunct teaching staff Brooke Meyer (anatomy/physiology NWTC) and Lyndee Cudmore (biology/anatomy).

The board also approved an item on the agenda called “librarian statutory waiver, deregulation for library K-12 for the 2019-20 school year.” This waiver would deregulate the library, at the school's request, so that they can hire someone to eventually become the librarian. Hailey Cudmore has a degree in communications, but the state requires a library sciences degree to be a librarian. The three-year deregulation will give Cudmore the time to get the necessary coursework done and apply for her librarian certification.

Other Business

In other business, the board approved the 2019-20 ODCT contract for secondary career and technology education programs, and approved accepting 11th and 12th grade math and science courses taken from the Career Technology Centers.

Athletic Director Bryce Schanbacher was added to the signature card at ACB Bank for the activity fund account.

Changes to the middle school and high school handbooks were approved, as was providing free breakfast for certified and non-certified staff and school district for the next school year.
