PORT ARANSAS, Texas (AP) — A supertanker threw a scare into passengers boarding a ferry in South Texas when it bore down on the docked ferry, sounded its danger horn and narrowly missed the vessel.

The incident happened about 9 a.m. Monday at the Port Aransas dock of the state ferry, which connects the Mustang Island town with Aransas Pass on the mainland.

A spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation says the tanker was headed for the Cheniere Energy liquefaction plant in nearby Gregory when its crew closed in on the ferry and sounded its danger horn. Spokesman Rickey Dailey says the horn prompted the ferry captain to quickly evacuate the ferry, sending passengers scurrying ashore.

Dailey says no collision occurred.

A Cheniere statement says its three tugs never lost control of the vessel.
